| China Milk Products Group Limited is the largest company specializing in the production of pedigree bull semen, pedigree dairy cow embryos and raw milk in the growing dairy industry in China1. Based in the Heilongjiang Province, we are strategically located in one of the top three regions in the world blessed with ideal conditions for breeding dairy cows - average temperature of 3.2 degrees Celsius and the Saertu grasslands which provide nutritious grazing for dairy cows.
With 13 farms in the cities of Daqing and Harbin, we own an impressive herd of more than 20,000 pedigree bull sires, dairy cows and calves comprising Holsteins of Canadian, Australian and Chinese origins and Simmentals. Holsteins are world-renowned for their ability to produce more milk than other breeds, particularly the highly-prized Canadian Holsteins which produce between 8 to 10 tonnes of raw milk per cow annually. Besides having one of the largest herds of imported pedigree Canadian Holsteins in the PRC, we also have Australian and Chinese Holsteins which produce between 5 to 7 and 4 to 6 tonnes per cow per year respectively.
Through our modern animal husbandry expertise, we have expanded our herd of pedigree dairy cows through artificial insemination and embryo transplantation techniques.
At China Milk, we grow most of our feeds internally. This ensures that our dairy cows are guaranteed the necessary nutrients that their bodies need as their meals are special blended feedstuffs, formulated by experts for the different groups of cattle, thereby ensuring the quality of raw milk produced. By growing our own feeds, China Milk is also protected from the impact of rising feed costs. We grow 75% of our total feeds internally, of these we produce approximately 90% of the corns required. This is a huge saving since feed costs remain the largest cost in the milk production process in China.
In addition, manure from our cattle is used as fertilisers for growing crops to produce our feeds, avoiding the need to purchase third party chemical fertilisers that could eventually contaminate animal feeds.
In July 2007, thanks to state-of-the-art equipment, China Milk commenced the production of gender-controlled bull semen and cow embryos for internal use. This raises the probability of breeding a dairy cow by over 90% and reduces the time needed for breed improvement by as much as 50%. It quickens the pace of our internal breeding and enhances our efficiency.
